Patchwork Kit: Basic tools for beginners. Start putting together your kit! These are the basic materials for beginners in patchwork! How about starting right away to assemble your patchwork kit, your atelier, and begin this therapeutic and lucrative activity? Come on, we believe in you! Below you can see a list of the basic tools for making patchwork, with a brief description of the functionality of each one for this technique. Take a look and find out what you will need to assemble a patchwork kit:

  1. Cutting Base: The cutting base is used to support and cut the fabric – remembering that it also helps maintain the cutting edge of the cutter blade for longer. They come in various sizes. To start with, you can buy a 45 cm x 60 cm one.
  2. Rotary cutter: This will be your great ally during your patchwork work. It is used to cut several layers of fabric at once, quickly and accurately. They also come in different sizes. To start with, it is best to get the 45 mm one.
  3. Measuring ruler or rotary ruler: This ruler has measurement and angle markings (30º, 45º, and 60º), and is, without a doubt, one of the most indispensable items on the list. There is a wide variety of these rulers on the market, but the most indicated for beginners is the 30 cm x 15 cm one.
  4. Sewing machine: If your intention is not to work with patches just to cover surfaces (as we mentioned above), you will need a sewing machine.
  5. Pins: Have no doubt that pins will be essential to help you do a more pleasurable job with better results. When it comes to sewing, you can’t live without them, can you?
  6. Pencil: To be able to make the markings on the fabric – that will help you when cutting – you will need a pencil (we recommend Faber Castell’s 6B, for having a brighter line) or a tailor’s chalk.
  7. Scissors: Everybody knows that scissors are essential in almost any branch of crafting or sewing. You will use them for cutting both threads and patterns.
  8. Tape measure: The tape measure is another item often used in patchwork to measure fabric and patterns.
  9. Opener: This accessory will help you a lot in undoing wrong seams. Believe me, it is very useful in patchwork!
  10. Fabrics: Patchwork cannot exist, of course, without them – after all, we are talking about patchwork. The most suitable fabrics for this activity are 100% cotton. They can be printed or plain.
  11. Blankets: The blankets are the fillers in your patchwork (remember the quilt we talked about above? So, they are in the middle of it!). For smaller pieces, the most advisable is to use acrylic blankets, while for larger pieces, we recommend the use of cotton blankets.
  12. Thread: There is no sewing without thread, is there? They can be cotton or polyester.
