Considered one of the main symbols of Halloween, the pumpkin brings up a story from North American folklore. Legend has it that a man named Jack used to overdrink and always got drunk. He crossed paths with the devil several times because of his alcoholism, but always found a way to escape from hell. Jack eventually could not stand the bohemian life and passed away. He found no place in heaven or hell, so his spirit wandered about with candles and turnips. In America, the legend arrived with the Irish immigrants and was adapted to use pumpkins, since the vegetable was found in greater abundance.

  1. wash the pumpkin well and dry it. Then make a circular line on the top and pierce it with a knife, making a hole.
  2. Remove the top of the pumpkin by slightly forcing the knife. Be careful not to injure this part, as it will be used for the decoration. Cut off the lint part of the top and set it aside.
  3. 3. With the help of a spoon, remove all the lint and seeds inside the pumpkin. The mission is to leave the pumpkin as clean as possible, with only the hard flesh that remains close to the skin.
  4. Place a piece of paper towel inside the pumpkin, because this is the only way to get the inside of the pumpkin clean and dry.
  5. Get a mold with the face that will be drawn on the pumpkin. You can enlarge and print one of the drawings available at the end of this article.
  6. Place the mold on the pumpkin and mark the empty spaces. It is best to use a thick needle and pierce the mold. The holes will delimit the area that will be cut out.
  7. 7. With a sharp knife, cut out the pumpkin, following the contour defined by the needle holes. Be careful to cut out only the marked areas, leaving the eyes, nose and mouth empty.
  8. Wipe the napkin over each hole to make it dry, smooth and clean.
  9. The pumpkin face is ready, now you just need to prepare the lighting system. Get a glass jar (of mayonnaise, for example) and wrap it with the flashing light.
  10. Place the lighted jar inside the pumpkin and close it with the cap. You can also replace this system with a candle or a flashlight.
  11. That’s it! Now just turn off the lights and celebrate Halloween.

Trick-or-treat is a typical Halloween activity for children and adults alike, celebrated mostly in English-speaking countries, where children go from house to house asking for treats with the question Trick-or-Treat? If people answer “trick or treat” those same people give the children candy, if they say “trick” the children scare them with masks, or by doing trickery like stuffing the front of the house with toilet paper or spraying it with colored foam. This activity is one of the main Halloween traditions.
